2013 Volkswagen Kombi Last Edition
Manufacture of the longest-produced model in the global automotive industry, the Volkswagen Type 2 Microbus, is finally coming to an end in Brazil after 56 years in production, which started in September 1957…
The Last Edition will be sold only in Brazil for 85,000 Brazilian reais ($35,637) and comes with a certificate of authenticity from VW and a numbered plaque on the dashboard identifying it as one of 600.
R.I.P., lil’ VW Microbus…you’re the end of an era.
While the microbus pictured above –based on the old Westphalia design– can still occasionally be seen on America’s road, those of us of an age remember something far different. Behold – the original hippie ‘van’!
For what was essentially an automotive piece of junk –slow, cumbersome and a cop magnet like you wouldn’t believe (I caught a contact high just looking at mini-Furthur there) –they were a hell of a lot of fun.
While not as ubiquitous as memory would have us believe, they were certainly more prevalent on the city streets than now.
Blegh – someone pass me the eye bleach.
