Moore, Oklahoma

We know all about the red clay of Oklahoma. And the fact that “safe” rooms, or tornado shelters, are considered ‘personal choices’ in the Okie State. 1 And while some might say that given merely two months has passed since the tragedy in Moore it’s too early to revisit the topic, we believe it’s almost too late: torando season will roll back around in Oklahoma in less than 10 months.

Shelter Oklahoma Schools apparently feels the same:

The devastating tornado that hit Newcastle, Shawnee and Moore on May 20, 2013 caused several tragedies. At least 24 people €“including nine children €” have been taken. Since it has been announced, seven of those children were from Plaza Towers Elementary.

We want to help rebuild what was taken so quickly from us. Shelter Oklahoma Schools was created with the purpose of providing storm shelters in and around Oklahoma schools and communities. We €™ve started this fund not only help people now, but for generations to come.

The fund will work with local schools and municipalities to build or fortify storm shelters across the state. The children at Plaza Towers elementary did not have to perish. Nothing we can do will bring them back or console their loved ones who remain, but we can try to stop this from ever happening again. Help us build a stronger future for our children for years to come.

What Shelter Oklahoma Schools doesn’t say, what with having to live and work in the state, is that Oklahoma state building codes do not require that schools provide safe rooms, instead leave such a life and death decision to the tightfisted by nature individual school districts. Who always have their priorities set right. 2 Sure, FEMA will seed the area with money after a disaster , but that is limited in scope and grudgingly given. 3

In an effort to raise monies to build these shelters, SOS got together with  Pirate Audio Sound System to release a compilation disc of DJ-produced music. Track list is here  and the actual music can be purchased here for just $10.

ALL SALES  GO TO  ShelterOklahomaSchools.org.

We thought the cause worthy and bought one.
