A BBC investigation suggests companies are wasting large sums of money on adverts to gain “likes” from Facebook members who have no real interest in their products.

It also appears many account holders who click on the links have lied about their personal details. A security expert has said some of the profiles appeared to be “fakes” run by computer programs to spread spam

Quelle horreur!!

Earlier this year Facebook revealed that about 5-6% of its 901 million users might be fake — representing up to 54 million profiles.

Graham Cluley of the security firm Sophos said this was a major problem. “Spammers and malware authors can mass-produce false Facebook profiles to help them spread dangerous links and spam, and trick people into befriending them,” he said.

Don’t know what the fuck they’re talkin’ about; my Jet Li account is perfectly legit.

As far as they know.

  1. I made up a facebook page for a friend who just opened a business. about the same time some company called and offered to “put her on google” for $5 for the first month and $50 or so thereafter. By that time I had her registered on google local, FB, yelp and google plus. then one day her fb page got almost 400 likes overnight, but most of them were from overseas – Russia, Middle East, Asia. some of those are now gone, but over 200 still remain, only 6-7 are real people who know her or used her business. they also made up a website. when she cancelled the service, they told her they “will take her out of google” (she is 70). They killed the site, but the domain they had was .info, so I got .com, made a small site and told her to never talk to these people again.

Something to say...?
