“I said anything I wanted because I don’t believe in children, I don’t believe in childhood. I don’t believe that there’s a demarcation. ‘Oh you mustn’t tell them that. You mustn’t tell them that.’ You tell them anything you want. Just tell them if it’s true. If it’s true you tell them.”
~ Maurice Sendak
I am an inveterate reader, have been since young.
It was expected, everyone in the house read. But I didn’t much care one way or another for Sendak. Where The Wild Things Are came along after I had put away childish things; my interest lay in baseball and girls. 1
But Sendak’s early books litter our house. The Astas can not get enough ot them and they watch and re-watch and watch again the movie version of Where The Wild Things Are nearly as much as they have worn out all the Harry Potter DVDs.
The Astas are still at school. But I expect after I tell them…tomorrow, the day after Maurice Sendak died, he will be twice as dead.
