OBL? He was a good neighbor; kept to himself, raked his sand, tended his goats. This comes as a BIG surprise…

OBL’s long overdue  demise does not mean there are no longer ‘terrorists’ who wish to attack America. Conversely neither does it imply   al-Qaida will implode  in the coming weeks.

OBL’s demise should mean that America can finally wake from its fever dream fascination with  the hallucinatory “war on terror” OBL represented. While OBL was hiding out “in the caves along the Afghanistan/Pakistan border” the threat he represented was far more ominous and real than a Homeland Security chart. 1

Though acknowledged his role in al-Qaida was diminished by his absence, OBL had been sold to us as the embodiment of terrorism. 2

I’m not saying we’ve spent the last 10 years cowering behind the couch, but it is worth noting that the day after OBL snuffed it Kansas Jackass Governor Brownback scared the shit out of  his state’s prairie dog populace by raising the existential threat level  amid the wheat fields. 3

OBL was the justification for thedisasterously illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq 4, the raison  d’être for torture, wiretaps, mass firings of the nations’ Attorneys Generals, the double-super secret PRISM information gathering program, prisoner abuse, illegal prisons, rendition, the curbing of constitutional rights,  Lady Gaga, and much much more.

Hard to believe we’ve spent the last ten years creating an atmosphere of secrecy and paranoia in this country worthy of Baron Munchausen in response to one attack on American soil. Perhaps now the boogieman is dead we can return to a reality promised not that long ago:

“…the fight against terrorists and violent extremists has been returned to its right and proper place: no longer defining, indeed, distorting our entire national security and foreign policy, but rather serving as a vital part of those larger policies. President Obama has made it clear that the United States will not be defined simply by what we are against, but by what we are for the opportunity, liberties, prosperity, and common aspirations we share with the world.

Rather than looking at allies and other nations through the narrow prism of terrorism whether they are with us or against us the administration is now engaging other countries and peoples across a broader range of areas. Rather than treating so many of our foreign affairs programs foreign assistance, development, democracy promotion as simply extensions of the fight against terrorists, we will do these things promote economic growth, good governance, transparency and accountability because they serve our common interests and common security; not just in regions gripped by violent extremism, but around the world.” (link)

President Obama made a decision not to release death pr0n pictures of OBL.

“…we don’t need to spike the football.”

To my mind that’s exactly right. It tightly follows with not  allowing OBL’s body to be carried away and buried, an obvious potential shrine for decades to come. Even  a photo of a desecrated OBL would do just as well; photography has the power to lift even otherwise obscure back-benchers into national prominence; no need to add to this particular individual’s legend.

Intelligence combined with a decisive will: kudos, Mr. President.

Fuck a buncha waterboarding. No matter what you believe or think you know, the whisper-stream over the last couple of years put OBL squarely in Pakistan, obviously protected by Pakistan invisible to the naked eye. Intelligence related to OBL’s location developed along those lines as well as cash and threats to certain Pakis to not piss themselves while we did the deed had been known for years.

Get over yourselves.

Odds and ends:

  • JSOC rocks – always has, always will.
  • The pilot of the chopper that FUBAR’d? Stones the size an elephant, man; he landed the bird in the compound anyfuckinway. Hooah, indeed.
  • Apparently JSOC has contained every other American male born since 1970; I’ve talked to more hooahs, snake eaters, force recons, deltas and green faces since Monday than Iever did when I served.
  • Up to this point no one’s claimed chairborne status. Heh heh.

Again, JSOC rocks – always has, always will.

Which is why this last weekend’s Tomahawk strike against children under the age of 12 was so disappointing. It was, in point of fact, nauseating. There is absolutely no reason  that President Obama could not have ordered a covert action similar to the one that killed OBL.

And given the unexplained and uncharacteristic stupidity of President Obama in ordering the unjustified and ongoing kinetic military action in Libya, last Saturday’s action borders on lunacy.

Three children under the age of 12? There is absolutely no justification in the world for that; who the hell did Obama think he was –  Shrub? Has the President sat down with Michelle and the kids and explained himself? How about Congress?

Those children’s deaths are morally reprehensible.

Indeed, it is safe to say that America’s participation in the bombardment of Libya, and the outright assassination attempts against its ruler Muammar Qadhafi, are equivalent to the illegalities of the previous Administration. No legal reason has been presented to Congress or the American people for our actions in Libya. War certainly hasn’t been declared.

Worse, it’s as if President Obama has channeled Shrub and now “trusts his gut.”

Good grief, sir: you just nailed the world’s biggest badass alive; stand down from Libya and hasten our exits from Iraq and Afghanistan before you do something equally stupid there, too.

  1. there is probably a 97% chance the pictures will leak anyway. this country doesn’t know how to keep secrets. it’s only a matter of time before team 6 shows up on oprah. neat-picking over waterboarding is lame, trying to make it look like this particular tip didn’t get extracted in a certain way. if you or a guy next to you were waterboarded 183 times, on the time number 184 you just have to splash some water. have some balls and stop trying to make it look good. it’s not supposed to look good.
lastly bombing of libya is probably worse than what bush did.at least he had some decency to send colin powell to the un with some fake evidence. this is not obama i didn’t vote for…

    1. there is probably a 97% chance the pictures will leak anyway. this country doesn’t know how to keep secrets.

      Agreed.

it’s only a matter of time before team 6 shows up on oprah.

Not a fuckin’ chance. Besides isn’t she due to retire to a chair at the Right Hand of God soon? But I won’t bet about any other media outlet; something has gone wrong in this country of late, with every swingign dick thinking they need public validation for everything they do, perhaps even breathing. I don’t understand it, but allow that you may well be right. However it would border on the suicidal for a SEAL team, no matter how good. There’s a reason their identities aren’t bandied about and it has nothing to do with junk mail…

neat-picking over waterboarding is lame, trying to make it look like this particular tip didn’t get extracted in a certain way. if you or a guy next to you were waterboarded 183 times, on the time number 184 you just have to splash some water. have some balls and stop trying to make it look good. it’s not supposed to look good.

My point was the “intelligence” gleaned from waterboarding and other “enhanced” interrogation techniques practiced on the guests at GTMO and other rendition-friendly vacation spots during the Bush years was long, long out of date; people held captive for 8 years or longer would have absolutely no clue as to where OBL had been holed up the last few years. Moreover, as I mentioned, US intelligence orgs –sans interrogation (enhanced or not) of anyone- has been well aware that Pakistan was sheltering OBL: if one reads between the lines at sites like Global Security et al it was obvious that the CIA had penetrated the ISI and knew, roughly, where OBL was just after Mr. Obama took office. It was the intelligence gleaned in Pakistan over the last couple of years that led directly to OBL’s death.

Consequently apologists for the excesses and illegalities of the Bush years should just give it a rest: I don’t fault them for trying, just for doing so lamely.

Finally –NO SNARK-vthe correct term is nit-picking.

As in, “Even though he appeared dapper, X.O. often covertly picked at the nits on his bald pate.” Nits being baby lice or other disgusting offspring.

lastly…bombing of libya is probably worse than what bush did.vat least he had some decency to send colin powell to the un with some fake evidence. this is not obama i didn’t vote for.

I doubt, in terms of killing people in other countries without first declaring war on them, there is even a notional degree of difference between Bush and Obama: both instances are illegal in my book. However we will have to wait and see if Libya becomes (long-term) another Iraq.

I certainly did not wish Mr. Obama to pursue such a course and am obviously appalled that he allowed his advisers (Clinton) to influence him to such a degree we’re bombing children in order to headhunt. To my mind that’s unforgivable.

  2. sorry about misspelling, it was 7am and I was in a hurry.will try to do better. I am sure interrogators at Gitmo were not asking “where is OBL today” every day for 8 years. as far as I am concerned, as long as gitmo is open, waterboarding is still going on. I don’t even need pictures. the whole thing about obama and people who adore him (and I mean adore) is that he has no balls. veto used 0 times, gitmo is still there, caving in prematurely 100% of the time, signed healthcare giveaway, etc, etc. I don’t know who convinced him to bomb libya but he should’ve just said no and let france do the deed. too much of a pussy, too bad for america. but some people are too busy writing panegyrics to him to notice anything. yeah, he watched OBL being shot on live TV but that’s about all the credit he gets. when was the last time he called the speaker and gave him a piece of his business LBJ-style? pussy.

To what possible end? After all this time anything valuable, along with a lot of pure crap, has long since been wrung out of the captives.

      I don’t even need pictures.

      Neither do I.

the whole thing about obama and people who adore him (and I mean adore) is that he has no balls. veto used 0 times, gitmo is still there, caving in prematurely 100% of the time, signed healthcare giveaway, etc, etc.

Wow – you’re wound up this morning; been talking politics at the office? I assure you I’ve never adored an American president (though were I to develop such a crush, it would undoubtedly be on a President sans testes); some have performed the duties of the office better than others, but all have had faults.

I don’t know who convinced him to bomb libya but he should’ve just said no and let france do the deed.

Agreed. I suspect Sec. Clinton totally misjudged the situation and gave bad advice to Obama had more to do with that decision than we currently know.

but some people are too busy writing panegyrics to him to notice anything. yeah, he watched OBL being shot on live TV but that’s about all the credit he gets.

Credit where credit is due: the Administration found the little weasel, isolated him (which I promise you meant playing Pakistan like an Oklahoma rube on his first trip to NYC), and then snuck in and successfully destroyed him (which action -to include armed feints combined with subtle disinfo- of necessity included more inter-agency coordination than you can conceive) without a prior leak or losing anything other than hardware.

You have no idea how hard that was. Job extremely well done, I say.

when was the last time he called the speaker and gave him a piece of his business LBJ-style? pussy.

As for calling up the Speaker of the House: personal management styles vary, as do the results. While LBJ has a certain reputation, I can tell you for a fact it didn’t always win out. He couldn’t do a thing with Tip O’Neill, for instance (as related to us by one of Tip’s nieces, Dawn. Always wondered what became of her…)

Or are you just trolling while bored at work? ; ‘ )

Something to say...?
