The quality of the candidates who make it on the ballot depends upon the quality of the electorate. The politicians who make it on the ballot are low quality because they appeal to the median voter. If the median voter has silly views, then smart, well-informed, intellectually honest, forthright politicians don’t stand a chance.

Many people complain that we’re always stuck choosing the lesser of two evils. The Comedy Central show South Park compared the 2004 presidential election to a school mascot election between a Turd Sandwich and a Douche. No, Joe didn’t ‘misspeak’ and force Obama to follow suit; that’s not how power works. What really happened is the Obama campaign/administration took a hard look at the poll numbers and decided to send Joe out to take one for the team (or be hailed a hero, depending on the results). And what they obviously discovered is it’s to Obama’s advantage this fall to be for gay marriage. If the nearly last 4 years have proved anything, it’s that Obama is a pragmatist. ↩

Boehner Goes All Emo ‘n Stuff

In a letter delivered last week, the White House warned congressional appropriators that the president will not sign legislation to fund the federal government if the bill or bills cut overall spending below the level the parties agreed to during last summer’s fight over raising the national debt limit.

In other words: It’s those spending levels, or a government shutdown.

At a his weekly press conference, I asked Boehner to respond to that letter.

“Blah blah blah blah blah, alright, so?” Boehner joked.

That’s the official response?

“Yes.” ¹
